Donaldson Shares Soar to 52-Week High on 2007 Outlook That Surpasses Analyst Predictions

Shares of Donaldson Co. surged to a new 52-week high Wednesday, a day after the air filtration system maker reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results and forecast 2007 earnings that trumped Wall Street's view.

Shares jumped $4.54, or 13.7 percent, to $36.60 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange, after touching a fresh 52-week high of $37.38 earlier in the session. Over the past 12 months, the stock had traded between $28.60 and $36 and is up nearly 5 percent from the beginning of the year.

The Minneapolis-based company on Tuesday said it expects 2007 earnings per share between $1.72 and $1.82, while analysts expect profit of $1.68 per share.

"It's a pretty good step up from what people's expectations were for 2007," noted BMO Capital Markets analyst Charles D. Brady.

The strong outlook is probably what is driving the stock movement, said Brady. Although the company performed well in the quarter, Brady doesn't see much reason for the stock price to climb much higher.

Donaldson said its fourth-quarter profit surged 44 percent to $36.2 million, or 43 cents per share, on $468.2 million in revenue. Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had forecast profit of 40 cents per share on sales of $456.6 million.

A combination of improved operating and gross margins, higher sales and selective price increases helped drive the strong results, said Brady.

Strong growth in the company's industrial products segment indicates industrial production end markets are still "fairly robust," said Brady, who has a "Market Perform" rating on shares.

Sales of replacement filters, which have high profit margins, were strong, as were sales in the European off-road, truck and aftermarket business and sales in the company's engine products segment, Brady added.

The results beat his expectations in both the company's major segments, engines and industrial products, the analyst said.
